The Brunei Energy Industry Integrity Pact Recognition event of 2018 Signatories was held on 15 November 2018, at the Indera Kayangan Hall, The Empire Hotel and Country Club. The event recognises 32 new signatories to the pact, comprising of both Bruneian owned and international companies that have affirmed their commitment to integrity and transparency in business operations. Present at the event as the Guest of Honour was Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Dr. Awang Haji Mat Suny bin Haji Mohd. Hussein, Minister of Energy, Manpower and Industry.

 

The Brunei Energy Industry Integrity Pact was initially signed by ten established oil and gas operators in May 2017. The operators have pledged their commitment to uphold the Integrity Pact's ten essential principles in their ways of working to ensure appropriate internal controls are in place to assess, prevent, detect and monitor integrity and compliance risks in the course of their operations. The signatories together form the Brunei Energy Industry Integrity Pact Working Group, whose objective is to share the best practices and learnings from incidents in order to strengthen corporate controls and mitigate applicable compliance risks. This year, the 32 new signatories to the pact affirmed their commitment to serve as role models to other companies in Brunei, demonstrating zero tolerance for corruption and committing to conducting business with utmost integrity and transparency.

 

Also in attendance were Yang Mulia Awang Haji Azhar bin Haji Yahya, Permanent Secretary (Energy), Ministry of Energy, Manpower and Industry (MEMI); Yang Mulia Awang Haji Zolkiflee bin Haji Abdul Karim, Permanent Secretary (Manpower), MEMI; Yang Mulia Pengiran Haji Mohd Hasnan bin Pengiran Haji Ali Hassan, Permanent Secretary (Industry), MEMI; Mr Daniel Elustondo, Ethics and Compliance Manager of Brunei Shell Petroleum Company Sdn Bhd and Chair of the Brunei Energy Industry Integrity Pact Working Group; senior Government officials; and Managing Directors, Chief Executive Officers, General Managers of the participating Oil and Gas Operators.

 

The event started with a safety briefing, followed by the recitation of Surah Al-Fatihah. A welcoming address was delivered by Mr Daniel Elustondo, during which he urged the new signatories to become a role model to the next group of companies who wish to join and continue to collectively commit to the practice of business integrity as the top priority in the industry.

 

The welcoming address was followed by a keynote speech by Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Dr. Awang Haji Mat Suny bin Haji Mohd Hussein, the Minister of Energy, Manpower and Industry. In his speech, Yang Berhormat Dato highlighted the importance of business integrity not just for attracting new industries to diversify the local economy, but also for the retention and growth of existing industries in Brunei Darussalam. Yang Berhormat Dato further reiterate that the commitment to endorse the integrity must also translate to the incorporating principles of  transparency, truth and honesty into the daily operations of businesses and code of conduct for employees. Additionally, Yang Berhormat Dato emphasised on building a culture of zero tolerance towards corruption and urge members of the Pact as well as the public to raise any concerns or suspicions directly with the Anti-Corruption Bureau

                                                      

The event was later concluded with the presentation of the certificates to the 32 new signatories by Yang Berhormat Minister of Energy, Manpower and Industry.
